Tanjong Malim, Jan 16 — A 73-year-old street vendor near Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI) remains dedicated to selling homemade traditional kuih and drinks, despite facing challenges such as rainy weather and student semester breaks.
The vendor has been operating near the Sultan Abdul Jalil Shah Campus (KSAJS) for several years. Every day, he and his family prepare a variety of traditional kuih using his own original recipes. Among the most popular items sold at his stall are pisang cheese, samosas, and lekor, which are especially favoured by university students.
However, business is often affected by the academic calendar and weather conditions. “When it rains or when students are on break, business becomes slower, but I continue selling as long as I am able,” he said during an interview at his stall.
Despite the challenges, he remains committed to his daily routine, starting his preparations early each morning before opening his stall. The perseverance shown by this elderly vendor highlights his dedication to sustaining a livelihood while preserving local heritage. It is hoped that continued support from students and the local community will help maintain his small business for years to come.
