Beyond the Lecture Hall: How UPSI’s Social Communication Students are Reshaping Malaysian Digital Media

TANJUNG MALIM, PERAK — Walk into the Faculty of Languages and Communication

(FBK) at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) this semester, and you might mistake

the lecture halls for active media production houses. Far from just studying public

relations theories and corporate communication frameworks, a passionate cohort of

students is actively building the future of local digital content.

These are the students of the Bachelor of Communication (Social Communication) with

Honors program, widely known by its course code AB14.

This semester, the AB14 cohort is undertaking BKS3344: Aplikasi Pembangunan

Kandungan Digital Kreatif (Creative Digital Content Development Application). Rather

than taking a traditional final exam, these future media practitioners are being assessed

on a high-stakes, real-world challenge which is creating high-impact digital content

from scratch.

From Classrooms to Digital Studios

The course divides students into small production teams, tasking them with navigating

the entire lifecycle of modern media creation. The results are highly diverse, spanning

across multiple formats, including narrative short films, hard-hitting dramas, podcasts,

and digital parodies.

The assignment forces students to step outside their comfort zones, turning theoretical

knowledge of audience demographics and storytelling structures into engaging digital

assets.

The Art of Comedy: Navigating Movie Parodies

For the students tackling movie parodies, the challenge lies in balancing humor with

technical precision. Recreating iconic scenes while adding a unique, comedic

Malaysian twist requires deep creative brainstorming and tight editing skills.

Leo, a student director leading one of the movie parody projects, shares:

“Doing a parody is much harder than it looks. You aren’t just copying a film; you have to

understand why the original scene worked and then figure out how to subvert it to make

people laugh. From script continuity to matching the camera angles on a tight student

budget, BKS3344 has taught us how to be highly resourceful filmmakers under

pressure.”

The Power of Authenticity: Capturing the Vlog Format

On the other end of the creative spectrum are the groups focusing on vlogging. Unlike

scripted parodies, vlogs rely heavily on charisma, pacing, and building an immediate,

authentic connection with the viewer.

Devpal, a content creator managing one of the vlog teams, explains:

“We chose the vlog format because it is what dominates platforms like TikTok and

YouTube today. The biggest hurdle wasn’t just holding the camera, but learning how to

edit out the boring parts to keep the audience’s attention span alive. We had to learn

how to tell a compelling story out of raw, everyday footage. It forced us to think like real

social media algorithm experts.”

Bridging Theory and Industry Standards

By allowing students to choose their own mediums whether it is an elaborate movie

parody driven by Leo’s team or an intimate, fast-paced vlog captured by Devpal’s crew—

the course ensures that UPSI’s AB14 graduates are fully equipped for an industry that

demands instant digital literacy. They are no longer just studying communication; they

are actively practicing it.

As the semester draws to a close, the campus community is eagerly anticipating the

public release of these student projects. For these social communication students, this

assignment is more than just a requirement to secure a portion of their 40% course

grade. It is the initial building block of their professional portfolios as they prepare to

step into the highly competitive Malaysian media landscape.
