TANJONG MALIM – Daily student life often revolves around convenience, affordability and accessibility. At Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), one of the latest additions contributing to campus convenience is Metrosaver, a modern mart that has steadily become part of many students’ daily routines since opening last year. Unlike several smaller café marts located around the campus, Metrosaver offers a wider shopping space and a broader range of products which makes it a practical option for students looking to purchase necessities without leaving the university area.

Students visiting the mart are greeted with shelves stocked with snacks, beverages, stationery, personal care items, frozen foods and other daily essentials. Its larger layout allows students to browse comfortably while purchasing multiple items in one location. For many students, the mart’s appeal extends beyond product variety. Its location near the university’s main academic blocks has made it particularly convenient for students moving between lectures, residential colleges and campus facilities throughout the day. With university schedules often packed with lectures, assignments, and extracurricular activities, accessibility has become an important factor in student spending habits. Many students now rely on the mart for quicker purchases between classes rather than travelling outside campus for basic necessities.

Janaanée, 22, a student from Kolej Ungku Omar (KUO), said the mart has helped her access products that are not easily available at the new UPSI campus and the cafe marts. “It’s really convenient because I can get things here that I usually can’t buy elsewhere, especially certain women’s products,” she said.

Similarly, Ngoh Xin Wei, 22, a student from KHAR, highlighted the importance of the mart’s strategic location. “It is close to the blocks I visit daily for classes, so it saves a lot of time when I need to buy something quickly,” she explained.

Besides convenience, affordability also plays a significant role in attracting students to the store. With rising living costs continuing to affect university students, many are becoming more selective with their daily spending. Students interviewed noted that having a nearby mart with reasonably priced products reduces the need for frequent trips outside campus, helping them manage both time and transportation expenses. The growing popularity of Metrosaver also reflects broader changes in student lifestyle preferences. Modern university students increasingly value spaces that combine accessibility, comfort and efficiency within their campus environment. As a result, campus facilities that simplify daily routines often become important parts of student life beyond their primary function.

Throughout the day, the mart experiences steady traffic from students purchasing quick meals, drinks, toiletries and study-related items. During peak hours between lectures, the space frequently becomes a brief meeting point where students gather before heading to their next classes. While some students still prefer purchasing groceries outside campus for larger or more specialised items, many view Metrosaver as a reliable option for everyday necessities and urgent purchases.

In a fast-paced university environment where schedules can quickly become demanding, facilities that provide convenience and accessibility continue to play an increasingly important role. For many UPSI students, Metrosaver has become more than just a campus mart. It now serves as a practical support space that helps students navigate daily campus life more efficiently.
